Facebook is going to release Facebook mail on Monday. There's no word yet on the released date for the Blackberry Facebook mail app or if its going to be integrated the current Facebook App. What make Facebook mail special is if they are going to use fb.com as the domain name making it the shortest email address available.

BlackBerry Composer

The second tool is BlackBerry Composer, a design and animation product that is great for helping you craft images, whether they’re static or animated. BlackBerry Composer has a full set of tools for designing built into it and it’s great for adding life to your images without having to buy other software.

BlackBerry Theme Studio is also friendly with other design tools. If you want to design your graphics in something like Adobe Photoshop or Adobe Illustrator, that’s fine too. If you want to add animation, you’ll need to learn a bit more about BlackBerry Composer, but we’ll cover that another time.

BlackBerry Torch 9800

If you're considering upgrading to a smartphone, you've undoubtedly come across the plethora of news articles and reviews for the iPhone and Android phones. What those news articles tend to gloss over is the fact that Research in Motion - BlackBerry's manufacturer - absolutely dominates the smartphone market. Nearly half of all smartphones sold are BlackBerrys. Combine that with a decade in the business; countless government, security, and business contracts; and a history of solid operating systems - you'd think RIM would get a little more love.

With the BlackBerry Torch 9800, RIM aims to get a little of that love back. The Torch is a hybrid of old and new, physical keyboard and touch screen, introducing new OS features while keeping the familiar BlackBerry feel. In short, if you're upgrading from a dumbphone to a smartphone, be prepared. RIM knows its smartphones.

The Torch features both a touch screen and a keyboard. BlackBerry users love their keyboard. Though at first glance, the keyboard seems small and cramped; once you use it for a while, you'll see how it's the perfect size for power texting. The touch screen uses an on-screen keyboard that takes some getting used to. In my experience, the trick is to trust the keyboard. I found that even more errors occurred when I was trying to fix a mistyped letter. The OS does a fairly good job of figuring out what you meant to type.

The important physical keys at the bottom are the BlackBerry (BB) key, the touch pad, and the Back key. While it's certainly possible to control the device using the touch screen alone, I find that I really like having the option to use either the touch screen, the physical key, or both. One notable exception, there is no touch screen control for Back; a control that I use quite frequently.

Learning to use a new phone can be a long and frustrating process. Add to that a device as advanced as a smartphone, and you could be looking at a very steep learning curve. BlackBerry has you covered. Found in setup, there are several tutorial videos to show you the basics of using your new device. There are no words, no lecture. Just watch, and you'll understand.

Smartphones are telephones; it's right there in the name. Not unexpectedly, the Torch performs well as voice communication device. Calls come through crystal clear, and signal strength almost always rebuilds itself quickly after falling.

The user experience on the Torch is a very fluid and well-designed experience; though at times the BlackBerry lags, especially on those very fluid screen transitions. For the most part, the new operating system glides through screens, photos, messages and so much more. In many ways, it is a very elegant OS.

Changing the settings on your old dumbphone was fairly difficult wasn't it? Digging down into menus - some with cryptic names - is a thing of the past. With BlackBerry's Quick Access Area, all your major settings and setups are found with the touch of a thumb. Wi-Fi access, Bluetooth, service status, and all the other settings can be changed here.

Underneath the Quick Access Area is the Notifications Bar. Here is where the different icons for new and unread emails, voicemails, text messages, Tweets, BBM messages, FaceBook updates, Windows Messenger chats, and many, many others will appear. Touching the Notifications Bar opens up a drop down list containing links to whatever is notifying you. One major disappointment with this feature is the inability to customize this feature. Filtering calendar appointments would be a nice addition. Hopefully, this will be theme- or application-customizable.

One of the nicest additions to the new OS is Universal search. From the home screen, just start typing. Your BlackBerry will search messages, contacts, phone logs, social media, and even settings to find what you're looking for. If it's not on your BlackBerry, you can search using YouTube, App World, Podcasts, Google, Yahoo, and a number of other search providers; all with a touch of a finger.

Keeping you connected is what BlackBerrys do best. For years, they've been top notch at getting your emails to you as quickly as possible. Now, the Torch comes ready to go with mobile apps for MySpace, FaceBook, and Twitter. Instant messengers aren't forgotten as the 9800 comes pre-loaded with five of them.

All of this Social Media could be quite overwhelming if there wasn't a way to organize them efficiently. The Social Feeds has you covered, organizing all of your social media in one timeline. Individual feeds, like FaceBook can be selected from the drop-down list. Social Feeds also manages RSS feeds on the device. RSS feeds give you a quick snapshot of news, articles, and events happening at your favorite websites. Feeds can be entered manually or even from a link in the web browser. With thirteen feeds (so far), I have a lot of articles to scroll through. A flick of the finger, though, and the articles go flying by. I can even "catch" one to stop the scrolling. All of this runs quite smoothly, except at startup. The app needs a few moments to fully start up and become functional.

Ask any BlackBerry user what they dislike about their device, and you will almost universally hear, "the web browser." With the Torch and OS 6, those days are gone. OS 6 features a snappy browser that gets the job done. There's more on the browser in the video, but suffice it to say that the browser in this new BlackBerry is a vast improvement over the previous versions.

The browser makes it easy to save favorite web pages. Sure you could bookmark your websites, but adding links to your home screen allows you to launch web pages with a single press. It's like adding your own mobile launcher for whatever web address you desire. Sharing those addresses with others is simple and effective. Send Page Address sends the page address via email, text message, BlackBerry Messenger, Twitter, FaceBook, and any other messaging app available to your Social Feeds. So much simpler than copy & paste.

Like most phones nowadays, the BlackBerry Torch 9800 features a camera - a 5 megapixel camera with a very bright LED for lighting. Able to record video as well as still photographs, the camera offers a number of scene modes. These modes allow for capturing images in a variety of locations and conditions. All of this means that the digital camera I bought just 3 years ago is now merely one feature among many on the Torch 9800. The Torch also supports geotagging, a controllable option to embed your GPS location into every photograph.

After you've taken that photograph, you'll want to view it on your device. The Media tab is where that action is at. Scrolling through photographs (and other images of your device) by flicking your fingers is fun, and the BlackBerry can even show a slide show. Cue up a song in the music player and you've got a music slide show.

The music player is a fully-functional app; allowing you to search music on your device and quickly scroll through songs based on album; artist; or genre. The tunes don't stop when you switch to another application. Pull up a song and give your BlackBerry-time a soundtrack.

Have you ever tried to format a video that plays just fine on your computer to one that would play on your phone? Difficult, time-consuming, and watching the finished product on some devices is almost painful. The Torch has none of those troubles. Supporting seven video formats (.avi, .mov, .wmv, .mp4, and others), there's no reason to ever convert a video. For those who are wondering, yes; it plays DivX-encoded files.

Applications for BlackBerry are a curious thing. The Apple App Store boasts some 200,000 downloadable apps. The Android Market serves 30,000. BlackBerry App world has less than 10,000. This certainly does no good for RIM as it works to find itself in the new smartphone market. There are two factors I think play a role in this.

Many applications for other smartphones, and indeed BlackBerrys as well, address some missing element in the smartphone OS. Research in Motion has a history of making advancements in the operating system to add those missing elements. BlackBerrys didn't have an RSS reader; now it's a part of Social Feeds. Podcatching - automatically downloading podcast episodes - required third-party applications on previous devices. Now - to be cliché - there's an app for that.

A second factor is AdMob, a respected analyzer of mobile statistics. AdMob also serves mobile ads and collects device data while doing so. When the numbers are crunched, BlackBerrys barely show up on the radar. One reason, the web browser experience on previous BlackBerrys has been imperfect to say the least, and thus wasn't used very often. Less use means less ads. And that means with a casual glance at AdMob, there aren't that many BlackBerrys in use. The first-time or struggling developer is going to go where the ad company says the money is, and right now, AdMob doesn't say the money is in BlackBerry.

All that aside, there are some fantastic apps for your new smartphone. Many of them are free. Google Maps (with voice search), instant messengers, streaming media are all available at no charge. There are hundreds of business and productivity apps; some free, some not. Games are available for the BlackBerry, but nothing like the speed and excitement of Low Grav Racer 2 on the iPhone. Then again, is your phone a handheld communicator or a toy?

In your online reading, you've probably come across several complaints about the Torch. Chief among them is that the Torch's processor (624 MHz) is not fast enough. This is a valid complaint; at times, the OS does run slowly. But the other 80% of the time, the Torch and BB OS6 run smoothly, giving a rich visual appeal to the device.

The Torch's small faults - like this and others that you'll find -add up to one glaring annoyance. It's like taking a thumbtack to the Mona Lisa. Sure you can still see the painting and marvel at da Vinci's work, but the tiny holes in the canvas take away from the overall picture until all you can see are the pinpricks.

Please don't get me wrong. The BlackBerry Torch 9800 is an amazing device, filled with a brilliant OS; solid social messaging; and a responsive web browser. It is a smartphone I will continue to use and enjoy for some time. But it could be better. I can see the pinpricks, RIM, but I can also see powerful OS beneath them. If Research in Motion listens to its audience, fixes the idiosyncrasies, and continues to support app developers; there's no limit to how awesome the BlackBerry Torch 9800 can be. And it's a pretty awesome phone as it is.

Blackberry Style

We'll be following up shortly with our full BlackBerry Style 9670 review, but in the meantime figured we'd throw up our initial hands-on video impressions to ease the wait for all the flip phone lovers out there. The BlackBerry Style will be available from Sprint starting this halloween, October 31st for $99.99 on a 2 year contract (see announcement). It's an attractive price for what really is a solid little BlackBerry. If you're a fan of flip phones, you'll definitely want to head into a Sprint store and put yours hands on one. I'm not sure photos or even video quite do the Style justice.

To be honest, my expectations for the BlackBerry Style were set pretty low. The pre-release photos that leaked out onto the net didn't show off the 9670 in the best of light, and heck, we even ran a poll on CrackBerry here asking readers whether the Style was Hot or Not, and a full 81% of respondents said Not and that RIM should just skip the 9670 and move on to the next device. Ouch. Painful. But after using the Style I can definitely see why Sprint wanted this phone and why RIM built it. With 512MB flash memory, BlackBerry 6, 5 megapixel camera and a decently sized screen, the Style has solid specs and serves up pretty snappy performance. There is a big user base of people out there who simply love the flip phone form factor and who want a full physical keyboard. The BlackBerry Style fills that void. Many Blackberry users constantly upgrade their devices to keep up with the newest technologies. Buying a used Blackberry phone from eBay can save you quite a bit of money. However, safety precautionary measures should be taken to avoid any possible scams. Here are some tips to ensure that you have a rewarding and safe experience buying a Blackberry device from eBay.

Before you bid on a specific Blackberry:

Check the seller's feedback - stick to sellers above 99; 98 with caution. Also, the higher the feedback score, the more experience and success they have as a seller.
Ask the seller possible further questions:
- Condition: Is the device used or brand new in unopened box?
- Is it locked or unlocked?
- What is the IMEI? (International Mobile Equipment Identity)
- Are there additional images of the phone you can look at? (eg. if they claim its unlocked...request photo proof of it, or if the picture looks generic or ripped off from someone else)
- Is there an IT policy?
- Are the water sensors intact?
- Is there are refund guarantee if you receive it dead on arrival?
With the requested IMEI, you can call the company the device is branded to in order to ensure that it is not a lost or stolen device. See if the PIN and IMEI have been released.

After receiving your Blackberry:

Make sure that it is unlocked.
Make sure there is an IT policy on it. To check: go to Options -> Security -> General Settings. Under services, find the IT policy; If you see any references to it, you will need to remove it.
It is recommended that you wipe the device for a fresh start.
If it is locked, you can get it unlocked.

If the received device was not properly described (and you are not satisfied):

Immediately contact the seller and demand a full refund.
If they refuse:
- Contact credit card company and file for fraud protection.
- File a dispute with PayPal and eBay
- Report fraud at local police department
- Leave negative feedback for the seller.

Other tips:

Limit payments to credit card since many cards offer fraud protection. PayPal is safe, but uses a dispute system where you may only be able to recover a small portion of your loss from the seller.
Save all correspondence with the seller for dispute records
Use feedback before and after each transaction.
Obtain tracking information from FedEx or UPS etc..
Research here for market place price ranges since "retail" prices are not accurate. Relying on actual sold prices as opposed to speculated prices will inevitably help gauge what you ideally should be paying for your Blackberry.

One of the many great things about a BlackBerry® smartphone is that you can set up individual ringtones for the various incoming messages or tasks (email, IM, and other alerts) as well as custom ringtones for individuals as discussed in the previous post on Changing-Your-Ring-Tone. This can help you to set priorities to your daily tasks by notifying you that you have a new e-mail message rather than a Facebook alert, or a meeting coming up and not an IM.

How to Personalize your Ringtones by Task
(Note: this is based on BlackBerry® Bold^TMsmartphone)

Your BlackBerry comes with some preset Sound Profiles - Vibrate, Quiet, Normal etc. However, you can change the settings within any of these to fit your preferences, or set up a new profile.

Find the Sound Profile Icon, open and find the "Advanced" option to make changes.
Choose a profile that you would like to edit - for example "Normal"- or click on the BlackBerry menu button and choose "New Profile"
A page with a list of alerts, types of messages, and application or tasks that use ringtones will be shown on this page. You can make changes to any of these.

Choose one task/alert/message (for example BlackBerry Messenger Message) by clicking on it.

There are a variety of settings that you can adjust, as well as you can have different settings for in and out of your holster (BlackBerry case). To make changes to a particular setting:

Scroll down to the item you want to change
Click the BlackBerry Menu button, choose "Change Option"
Highlight your setting and select.

Note: If you are changing the ringtone or volume you will hear the ringtones as you scroll over the options.

When you have made all the changes you want to make to Ring Tone, Volume, Number of Beeps, Repeat Notification and Number of Vibrations click once more on the BlackBerry Menu and choose "Save". You can do this for any of the items on the profile. In fact. you could potentially have a different ring tone for each type of message, calendar alert etc. Personally, I have set my IM clients with one ringtone, my personal e-mail with another, and work e-mail with a third variation.

Due to new methods of production, and digital technology we have come to expect that we should be able to modify anything and everything. From our computer desktop to web sites, and from T-shirts to M&M's® - we want to be able to customize it, personalize it, and essentially make it reflect our own tastes and individuality. So, it will come to you as no surprise that the first thing most of us want to do when we get a new BlackBerry® is to start personalizing it!

Here are the basics to personalizing your home page.

Wallpaper Picture

Your screen will likely have a nice scenic shot as your "wallpaper" or "home" image. While clouds, mountains and placid waterscapes are lovely - you might prefer a photo of your dog, kid, or your favourite Facebook profile picture. I went with my kids because it is easier to brag about them if I can also show off their picture:

Here is how you do this:

Use your BlackBerry camera to take a picture of your favourite pet, kid, place, etc.

From the picture view press the BlackBerry Menu button (this is the button with the BlackBerry logo on the left side of your trackball) This menu will have a choice "Set as Home Screen Image" - choose this and your new picture will now appear on your screen when you are at the "Home" page!

If you already have an image you want to use:

View Pictures: Media>Pictures>All Pictures

Open the picture you want as your Wallpaper

Press the BlackBerry Menu button (as above) and choose "Set as Home Screen Image"

If your picture isn't already on your BlackBerry,:

Use e-mail to send the image to an address associated with your BlackBerry.

Open the attachment and save it. View Pictures: Media>Pictures>All Pictures (or choose the folder where you saved your image)

Open the picture you want as your Wall Paper.

Press the BlackBerry Menu button (as above) and choose "Set as Home Screen Image"

Note: Reduce the size of you images before e-mailing them, you don't need a picture that is 12" for a BlackBerry screen! Remember data charges may apply.

Icons

Chances are the Icons on your main page are not set-up the way you would like them. We are all different - so of course you can customize this as well!

Think about what tasks you do most frequently, or which applications you use most often. These should be the first icons you see when you turn on your BlackBerry.
Move the icon by highlighting the icon and clicking the BlackBerry Menu button, and then choose "Move".
The Icon will now have a frame with arrows around it, use your trackball to move it up, down, left or right.
Do this with any other Icons you wish to move until your page is exactly as you want it!

Changing Your Ringtone

It is one of the first features people change when they get a new phone - the ring tone! For some reason a ring tone says something about you, and it makes the phone "yours". Not only does it reflect your groove, it can also allow you to know who is calling without looking at your BlackBerry® by setting a custom tone for your favourite (or not so favourite) people.

How to change your ring tone?

Choose Media on your main page

Then click on Ring Tones on this menu
Choose "All Ring Tones"
From here you can play any of the pre-loaded ringtones.

When you have located a ring tone you prefer click the BlackBerry Menu Button and choose "Set as Ring Tone".

That is it!

How to personalize your ring tones by individual:

Go to your address book

Find the person whose ring tone you want to customize
Click the BlackBerry Menu button, scroll down to Add Custom Ring Tone
Chose the ring tone and press OK.

Taking Picture

I went to a BBQ this weekend and I was chatting with a couple of recent converts to the BlackBerry® smartphone. We spent quite some time wondering how we existed B.B. (aka Before BlackBerry). We marveled at how we got along before we could IM, email or check Facebook® from anywhere. Similarly, my previous BlackBerry was a model without a camera. I didn't mind, as I didn't know what I was missing.
Now that I have the BlackBerry® Bold^TM smartphone I've found so many uses for the camera on my BlackBerry device!

Shopping: Taking pictures of products and sending them to family and friends "Hey, do you like this one?" or "Is this the brand you wanted me to pick up?", or "Add this to my wish list!"
Just in case pics: We found this handy when we were on vacation and the rental car was in less than perfect shape. As we did the initial walk-around with the rep we took pictures of the damage.
Line-ups: I will on occasion send my husband pictures of grocery store line-ups or photos of traffic (I commute - I don't do this while I am driving ) instead of sending him a long explanatory email about why I will be late.
Weather: I like to brag when we have nice weather so sometimes I will take a picture and send it to my family on the rainy coast.
Home Improvements: We were recently shopping for hardwood floors and so I took photos of the room with us. It doesn't beat having the actual samples in the room, but it meant we brought home the right samples the first time!
Quick shots for sharing: Best of all I love being able to take pictures and immediately share them without every having to download them to a desktop.

Geotagging 101

Thanks to digital photography I take thousands of pictures a year. I have about 15,000 images stored on my computer, only sortable by date or folder name. So, I have recently started to tag these images with keywords describing the individuals and events in the pictures. In the future when I want to be able to locate all pictures of my son sleeping in a car or pictures of my husband and I on vacation, I will be able to simply click on a few check boxes or type in a selection of keywords in my photo software. Of course doing this for 15,000 images is a time consuming job.

Along with tagging the images with the people and activities in them I often use keywords to describe the location the image was taken. As cameras have become more advanced, some are now including GPS capabilities, which means that this will longer be necessary. Cameras with GPS technologies allow location information (longitude and latitude) to be written directly to the file at the moment the image is shot. This ability is also available on some newer BlackBerry® smartphones and is termed "Geotagging".

What is geotagging?

A digital photo is geotagged when location data (latitude and longitude coordinates) are added to the digital file alongside the photo’s existing EXIF data.

What you need:

BlackBerry with camera and GPS (enabled)

How to turn on Geotagging:

(Note these instructions are specific to BlackBerry® Bold^TM smartphone because that is what I have)

From camera screen click on the BlackBerry menu button (this is the button with the BlackBerry logo).
1. In this menu choose "Options"
2. Scroll down to "Geotagging" and set to "Enabled"
3. Click on the BlackBerry menu button again and choose "Save"

When you are in the camera screen you should see a small map icon in the right hand corner. This indicates that you have enabled geotagging. However, in order for it to work you will also have to ensure that you have turned on GPS Services.

To turn on GPS Services on your BlackBerry:

1. Go to "Options"

2. Choose "Advanced Options"

3. Scroll down and click on "GPS"

4. Choose "Location On" for GPS Services

In the camera the geotag icon (the little globe in the right hand corner) needs to be white in order for the geotagging feature to work. If the icon is red it is not picking up your location via the GPS. For the most part this will be an issue when you are indoors or if you have just turned on your phone, as it may not have coordinated your location with the satellite yet. To be sure that you are connecting with GPS - open BlackBerry Maps® and "Start GPS navigation".

Now you are ready to shoot photos with geotags!

Don’t we all love shortcuts? We look for ways to make our route shorter (take the road less traveled, the one with fewer stop lights, or the one with more lanes), ways to cook our food faster (pre-cooked bacon), and ways to type on our BlackBerry® smartphone quicker. Whether you want to beat your friend in a type-off (whose thumbs are faster?) or just want to get more accomplished - you need to know about a neat BlackBerry feature - AutoText.

If you have ever typed the word "dont", "wouldnt" or "youve" using your BlackBerry smartphone you will notice that they quickly become "don't", "wouldn't' and "you've". Similarly, "i" becomes "I" and "www" remains status quo even at the beginning of a sentence. There are presets for commonly misspelled words, words with apostrophes, and words that require a particular lower or upper case at all times. If you need to tell a friend your phone number or PIN number simply type "mynumber" or "mypin" and the number will appear in its place.

You can also create your own AutoText settings to shorten frequently used words, or statements. A few I have created:

Type "wru" and it is replaced with "where are you?" (a question I ask my husband regularly when we are out at the hardware store and he has gone missing! )
Type "bb" and it is replaced with "BlackBerry" (obviously this is a well used word in my vocabulary!)
Type "omw" and it is replaced with "on my way" (worthwhile when you are leaving work late and you want your spouse to know you have left)

How to use AutoText on your BlackBerry:

Go to Options (wrench) > AutoText

You can scroll through the presets to familiarize yourself with existing AutoText.

To add your own AutoText:

Click the BlackBerry Menu Button > New >

Type the quick text in the first field, and then what it will be replaced with in the following field, as seen below

Click the Menu button > Save
Ta Da! You have now created your very own shortcut.

It might be a stretch to call this "going green", it isn't on par with using reusable bags or replacing your light bulbs with energy efficient bulbs, but these are a few tips tohelp you maximize your batter charge!

Network Connections
Turn off unused connections when not in use for example: Wi-Fi ® Bluetooth® (Manage Connections)
Use “Auto On/Off” (Options>AutoOn/Off)
Use a single mode only. Choose 2G or 3G rather than 2G and 3G. (Options>Mobile Network)

Applications
When exiting, be sure to close the app, not leave it running in the background. (close with the ESC key, the rounded arrow not red power end key. Or, choose Menu button and scroll down to close)
Log out of applications when they are not needed.

Screen/Keyboard
Reduce Backlight Timeout (Options> Screen/Keyboard)
Reduce Backlight Brightness (Options > Screen/Keyboard)
Use a device holster (this turns off LCD automatically when you put your device away)
Set Audible Roll for your trackball to mute (Options> Screen/Keyboard)
Key Tone Off (Options> Screen/Keyboard)

Camera
Turn off flash (Camera > Options)
Set picture size to Small (Camera > Options)
Set Color Effect to Normal (Camera > Options)
Set Picture Quality to Normal (Camera > Options)

GPS
Turn off GPS when not required (Options > Advanced Options > GPS)
Use the zoom out function to get the largest viewable area that you can still use usefully.

Browsing
Close browser when finished using (close with ESC key, not red End key)

Using Blackberry Messenger

About two years ago we were visiting a local park with our son when he met a new little friend. It was the first time we had seen our son, who was two at the time, play with another child, as opposed to beside another child. We were excited to see how well they played together, as were the other boy's parents. Over the course of a few visits to the park we eventually exchanged phone numbers with the other parents so that we could arrange a future play-date. Neither us nor the other parents ever got around to calling. However, at the park, later that summer, we were talking about our BlackBerry® smartphones and decided to exchange PINs so we could chat over BlackBerry® Messenger.

From that moment on we began messaging each other about when we were going to the park; we organized play-dates; and weekend excursions to museums or theme parks all via IM! We could have done this by picking up the telephone but there was something less obtrusive about Messenger. We could message and reply at any time, unlike a telephone call where there is the potential to call at an inconvenient time for the other party. Using Messenger made organizing and meeting up simple and easy. Two years later, my son continues to be friends with the other boy and my husband and I are great friends with the parents. I credit Messenger for our friendship!

Messenger is a great way to connect with your friends who have a BlackBerry smartphone. If you are new to BlackBerry devices or have never used Messenger this will get you started:

Using BlackBerry Messenger

• Find BlackBerry Messenger, hint it looks like this (and may reside in your Instant Messaging folder)

• Your first time using BlackBerry Messenger you will be asked for a display name (this is the name that will show up on your friend's contact list), and a password.

To add contacts to Messenger:
• From the Contact List screen click the Menu button - looks like this:
• Click "Add a Contact"
• This box will pop up:

• Type an email address, name or PIN, press enter key.

Note: You can only add a 'name' if the individual is listed in your address book with a valid email address.

Viigo is a fantastic free offline RSS reader. You will have some default RSS feeds on your BlackBerry. You could add and dispatch RSS feeds from the home screen of the application program. They also offer a pretty complete listing on RSS feeds you can select from if you select add from list.

Now to assume what makes theapplication shine. In the options you will find out a setting allowing you choose how many RSS items the software should have stored at a time. The default is 250 but you can change that to 1000 by clicking on that box and typing 1000 out on the keyboard. The software auto-configures your connection but if it is inappropriate change it in the settings. You then need to change if you want the software to autoupdate every selected hours or to only update manually. This is a groovy feature if you are on a limited data plan. You can as well set if you want the software to handle rich text and download images.

The RSS reader is keen once it starts downloading the feeds every two hours. The reading pane takes advantage of the BlackBerrys scroll wheel to control what you are reading. I wish they tailored the software to let you hit the Spacebar to scroll down in an item but as of now you can hit “N” to go to the next item and “B” to go to the previous. You also have the ability to send the article link by email from your address book. The only downside of that is that it only lets you email the first email you have on file for each contact, even if you select different email address. They just added new functionality to be able to add the item to your del.icio.us account.

Take two very similar devices that are selling today, put them up against each other, and you get BlackBerry Bold vs. iPhone 3G.

How do they match up?

The BlackBerry Bold is very well built, and should last as long as you would like it to, barring any kind of abuse on the light weight device.The iPhone 3G is also built very well, the inside engineering is great, the glass is precision-laser-cut, and it should be able to stand a bit more abuse than that of the BlackBerry.

How do they look?

The BlackBerry Bold looks very clean and sharp. The face is black, the sides are chrome, and the back is black leather. The layout of the phone is simple and easy to understand.

The iPhone 3G is undoubtedly a world icon as far as mobile phones go these days. The 3G comes in only two colors; black or white. Although the 3G appears small, most of the commonly used features are accessible.

The BlackBerry Bold is larger in size than the 8800, and is the largest in size since the 8700. The Bold may be a little much in one hand for some people, but the keyboard accounts for much of the space, and most likely, two hands will be used for the keyboard.

The iPhone 3G is slimmer, and easier to hold in one hand than the Bold, but obviously doesn’t have the larger keyboard.

The screen of the BlackBerry Bold is excellent. Graphics, content, videos, it all looks great on the Bold thanks to the dense ppi ratio.

The screen of the iPhone 3G is not far behind that of the Bold. Make entire use of the 3.5″ screen while not using the virtual keyboard. Web browsing, email, and videos all look great on the screen of the 3G.

The keyboard of the Bold is excellent. The look, the layout, and the feel of the keyboard is all good.

The keyboard of the iPhone is virtual, which may be nice to some people, but not so nice to others. If you are looking for the real feel of the keyboard then the virtual may not do.

How well do they operate?

Many people love the operating system of the BlackBerry, it does what it’s supposed to do, and users seem to find all of the tricks in which to get all of the usability out of it.

The operating system of the iPhone is said to be the most technologically advanced, out of any other mobile operating system in the world.

As far as general usage goes regarding battery life, the Bold seems to last a littel bit longer than that of the iPhone. You can probably expect to get the same usage out of the Bold battery, as that of any other BlackBerry.

The call quality of each phone seems to be very good, the iPhone might get the slightest edge as sounding a bit more natural than the Bold.

What about email?

On the iPhone reading email may be second to none, however, everything else even related to email is better on the BlackBerry. Using the keyboard on the BlackBerry makes working with email fast and easy. You might say that email on the BlackBerry is almost perfect?

How are these phones for business use?

The BlackBerry can handle anything that you would normally do from Outlook on your Exchange server, and it is a perfect desktop extension. The BlackBerry is said to be the most secure device in the world for business use.

The iPhone needs more testing with its security, the device deployment tools need some work, which leaves the iPhone with more to prove in the business world.

What can I expect to pay?

The BlackBerry Bold is somewhere in the range of $199-$299 with a 2 year contract, and the iPhone is $199 at 8GB and $299 at 16GB, so the pricing seems to be fairly equal between the two.

Which phone is better overall?

Really neither phone is that much better than the other. The Bold is the best BlackBerry up until now, and it is great for business use. The iPhone is a consumer device, and most of the original problems have already been addressed. It all comes down to what you like and what you really want in a phone. Each phone is great in its own right, so the battle really comes down to you, the consumer.

The new app from TechMogul Industries is Capture It, used for take a screenshot of straight your BlackBerry screen. Generally, the application is based desktop that requires a USB connection to the Blackberry device itself. While Captur It easier for users because the screen capture can be done directly on the blackberry itself.

Great program, even so. Nowadays I can take pictures of my blackberry screen without using my PC and USB cable. Very useful when trying to describe a problem to tech support of a program in hand.

I will still keep my camera as the default right convenience key, and only change it to CaptureIt when I need to take a pic of my screen; then revert back. Mainly, becuase I'll apply my camera more than taking screen shots of my screen.

I've only two complaints about the software. I would like to specify a shortcut to take snapshots because I already apply my two appliance keys for other apps. As well, it won't scroll down to take one long picture of the entire screen. Capture It only captures what you see.

A different great way to apply CaptureIt is to snap your BlackBerry's home page. That way if you ever get a new BlackBerry or restore it to manufacturer's settings, you know what apps you have and how they're organized. I love to coordinate my stuff, so that's crucial to me.

To check if your BlackBerry is "unlocked" for use on carriers other than for which it is branded :

1. On your BlackBerry, go to Options > Advanced Options > Sim Card.

2. At that screen type MEPD (see annotation below) on your keyboard. A new menu will pop up.

* If your BlackBerry has a SureType keyboard (71xx and 81xx devices) you'll need to double-tap the P, so the actual keys entered become M E P P D.

3. Look for Network in the list.

4. If your device is "unlocked", it should say Disabled or Inactive. If it says Active, it's still locked to that carrier.

Tips to Remove IT Policy from Blackberry

1. Ensure the Blackberry Desktop Manager is installed applying Blackberry Internet Service, and not Blackberry Enterprise Server. If you are uncertain, it would probably be a good idea to uninstall the Desktop Manager and start again.

If you don't have the CD that accompanied your Blackberry, the Software can be download.

2. Download the file policy.bin and save it in your Blackberry installation directory (C:\Program Files\Research In Motion\BlackBerry).

3. Wipe your Blackberry, creating a backup if necessity. Select Options/Security/Wipe on the Device.

If this option is unavailable, you may have to install the latest software on your Blackberry. You need to Download and install the latest Desktop Manger Software, then the latest Handheld Software. Connect your device, open the Desktop Manager, select Application Loader, and follow the prompts.

4. Close the Desktop Manager if it is open.

5. From the Windows Start Menu select Run..., and at the prompt type regedit. In the tree on the left hand side, navigate to:

HKEY_Current_Users\Software\Research In Motion\BlackBerry\PolicyManager

Right-Click the Policy Manager Folder and select New/String Value. Name the value Path. Now, Double-Click the Path Subkey and set Value Data to:

C:\Program Files\Research In Motion\BlackBerry\policy.bin

6. Open the Desktop Manager.

7. Connect the Device.
